Outdoor Office BarCamp, Helsingborg, Sweden, September 7 – 8, 2024

Here is the revised translation:

On September 7-8, 2024, the pioneers of the Outdoor Office movement will gather for the first international physical meeting, in nature, in a dynamic and appealing space in #Helsingborg, #Sweden, specifically at the Fredriksdal Museum and Garden.

The BarCamp concept is an initiative of our colleague, Ulli Wackenroder, a pioneer of the Outdoor Office movement, and a component of his platform myBusinessCamp – #OutdoorOfficeBarcamp.

Differently from formal seminars, BarCamps don’t have predetermined speakers. All topics are proposed, developed, and hosted as sessions by the participants themselves. In fact, within this concept, they are referred to as contributors rather than participants. Key rules and principles of a BarCamp include:

  • Communicating the idea to the target audience: Create a media channel to present and communicate the BarCamp, such as a social media page or blog, which functions before, during, and after the event.
  • Hosting a session: If you want to host a session, you must announce it by the morning of the event at the latest, but ideally as early as possible on the BarCamp channel.
  • Session duration: Sessions will last as long as necessary, but no more than 45 minutes.
  • Contributor sessions: All contributors will be invited to lead a session that may include current industry situations, case studies, or various problems.
  • Session scheduling: At the beginning of the event, there will be a host session where all sessions will be presented. The most popular sessions will be voted on and ranked, and the spaces for each session will be allocated.
  • Conclusions and next steps: Conclusions and follow-up actions will be established for each session and for the BarCamp in general.

I met with Ioana Biriş, the initiator of the Nature Desks and Outdoor Office Day concepts, while seeking partnerships and collaborations for the Urban Link 15′ program at one of the online launch events for the “New European Bauhaus” program, an important component of the European Green Deal. Ioana Biriş is a psychologist who moved to Amsterdam in 2000 and is the initiator of the Nature Desks and Outdoor Office Day movements.

Another effective concept for working outdoors, promoted by Ioana, alongside BarCamps, is the concept of WEETING, which is based on the book “Walk Your Meeting” by Dutch consultant in the field of organizational change and development, Martine de Vaan. The book “Walk Your Meeting” explores the idea that meetings can be much more productive, creative, and healthy when they are held on the move, meaning when participants walk while discussing. Martine de Vaan presents the benefits of this type of meeting, which include improved mental clarity, increased creativity, and reduced stress, all of which contribute to a more efficient and enjoyable work environment.

The basic structure of a WEETING has the following important stages:

  • START – getting moving
  • 1 – Setting the goal: Together with your walking colleagues, define what the results would be at the end of the walk that everyone would be happy with.
  • 2 – Interim score: Are the discussions effective and according to plan? This would be the control question halfway through the route. At this point, it is determined what the course of the discussions should be for the last half of the route.
  • 3 – Recording conclusions: Outline the results and record them, or at least mark what the next action would be. Take notes or record them vocally on your phone.
  • END – mission accomplished

The meeting with Ioana, along with the preparations during that period for the program Timisoara European Capital of Culture 2023 inspired the development of ErgoWork Society’s multi-year ‘Meaning and Fusion of Work‘ initiative.
